Description: The increasing trends in obesity among women of reproductive age as well as among children aged 2-19 years suggest an influence of the maternal milieu in the transgenerational inheritance of obesity. This symposium will present empirical evidence from clinical, translational, and epidemiological studies that highlight the roles of nature and nurture in the development of obesity in mothers and their offspring. You will learn how physiological and behavioral variables studied before, during, and after pregnancy impact the metabolic health of both mom and baby and new alternatives under investigation that will potentially prevent the transmission of obesity.

Learning Objectives:
2. Understand the evidence-based science regarding neuroendocrine, environmental, endocrine, microbiota and/or cognitive behavioral mechanisms regulating energy balance and body weight. Apply that knowledge to develop and implement treatment options for adults and pediatric patients with overweight, obesity or obesity-related co-morbidities.
3. Implement appropriate strategies for diagnosing adolescent and pediatric obesity, evaluate current treatment options and emerging therapeutics and provide care and treatment to adolescent and pediatric patients accordingly. Teach evidence-based strategies for obesity prevention in the pediatric and adolescent population.
