Description: There is a growing body of evidence regarding the potential advantages and disadvantages of intermittent energy restriction paradigms for weight loss. This symposium will review the current clinical trial evidence supporting the weight loss benefits of 3 main subtypes of intermittent energy restriction dietary paradigms in adults with overweight and obesity. Come learn from the experts about the evidence for these popular dietary paradigms for weight loss! The dietary paradigms covered are: 1) time restricted eating (i.e. a recurring daily pattern of restricting food intake to a 10 hour window every day), 2) intermittent fasting (i.e. recurring short periods lasting 1-2 days of either complete fasting (water only) or substantial energy restriction with intervening days of normal food intake), and 3) periodic fasting (i.e. periodic cycles of either complete fasting (water only) or very low calorie diets lasting for more than 2 full days with intervening periods of 7 days of normal food intake between cycles). Talks will highlight human clinical trials data on the efficacy for weight loss as well as facilitators/barriers to dietary adherence and potential unintended consequences/side effects with these novel dietary paradigms.

Learning Objectives:
1. Apply the latest recommendations for evaluation and treatment; tailor intervention strategies based on patient characteristics such as age or metabolic or behavioral phenotype; understand the differences between weight loss and weight loss maintenance.
5. Apply new knowledge related to dietary intervention and physical activity from the perspectives of Metabolism and Integrative Physiology, Neuroscience, Intervention and Clinical Studies, Population Health, Clinical/Professional Practice, and Policy/Public Health.
